STAT is Involved in Defense Response to Oxidative Stress

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) cause oxidative damage to macromolecules and are causally linked to aging and death. Moreover, intracellular ROS initiate multiple signal transduction pathways including Janus kinase (JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) pathway. Although many important roles of STAT in numerous cellular processes have been elucidated, the roles in longevity and stress resistance were rarely reported. Therefore, in this study, using Drosophila Stat92E heterozygote, whether STAT protein is involved in defense response to oxidative stress and the aging process were investigated. The heterozygous Stat flies were shortened life span than that of wild type and showed excessive ROS generation. And also we detected that increased sensitivity by ROS in Stat mutant as well as old aged flies. These data suggested that Stat92E is involved in defense response against oxidative stress and aging.
